There is an adage regarding the prevention of sexual transmitted diseases . If one engages in physical sexual activities with another, that person is exposed to all sexual contacts of that other person. Most STD are silent, causing no noticeable symptoms, but have serious, harmful consequences, some life threatening. STI, Sexual Transmitted Infections can be diagnosed only by testing. One in two sexually active persons are expected to contract STD by age 25. Adolescents are extremely venerable due to their phase of, "it won't happen to me," and the misinformation or misunderstood or lack of information received regarding STI and safe sex.. The use of chemicals also increases the risk as it effects the decision making section of the brain and impairs the choices needed to practice safe sex.

Abstinence of sexual intercourse, certain types of kissing, oral sex, and anal sex can prevent STD. All sexually active should have access to reliable preventive information. Sexual partners should be tested. Those sexually active with more than one partner should use a condom and periodically be tested for STI. The consistent and correct use and the correct kind of Condoms, latex, can reduce the STI risk. Some STI can be transmitted through the soft skin of the mucous membranes of those areas just mentioned when there is contact made with infected lesions.

HIV is transferred through the blood, sexual fluids or breast milk. Once in the blood stream HIV can progress into AIDS. Infected blood, (and that also includes that on the blade of a knife, or a syringe) transmits HIV. Saliva does not transmit HIV infections. But, a skin nick or an abrasion on the tongue, throat, penis, vagina, anus, are any area of the skin can provide an opening in which infected blood can enter the body. At this time there is no cure or vaccine for HIV. If it progresses to become AIDS it becomes life threatening by lowering the person's immune system and inviting other infections.

All persons age ten and older are urged to take responsibility for preventing STD in themselves and others by learning and using preventive measures and sharing correct information regarding safe sex with others.
